Byron Villacis Cruz is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Oregon. His research examines elites, expertise, quantification, and the institutional production of knowledge, with a focus on Latin America. He studies how economic, political, and transnational elites shape expert fields, public statistics, and governance. His work combines geometric data analysis, archival research, interviews, and institutional analysis. He holds a PhD in Sociology and Demography from the University of California, Berkeley. Before entering academia, he served as Director General of Ecuador’s National Institute of Statistics and Censuses, where he led the 2010 Population Census.
